The Tiwi Islands are located just
north of the Australian continent.
A short boat trip from Darwin.
They consist of two main islands,
and are officially part of Australia.

I like the aboriginal art in the church – almost islamic.

It’s interesting that long before
Europeans arrived, Indonesian
Muslim fishermen were in regular
contact with the Tiwi Islanders.
Perhaps they had an influence on
the culture.

I thought that aboriginal art came out the mists of time or is that the rock art? If the dot art is equally established the influence could have gone the other way.

The Tiwi’s are but a small drop
off the huge mainland continent
of Australia. Apparently there was
trade between the vastly dispersed
indigenous tribes. And they do all
have common ancestry as well as
cultural roots. I’ve taken pictures of
some ancient rock art from Uluru
and Kakadu. I’ll post them soon
… just for you Graham 😎

Officially part of Australia, so the
Tiwi people are Aussie citizens.
