Democracy Is Coming

A house divided . . .

It’s coming through
a hole in the air
From those nights
in Tiananmen Square
It’s coming from the feel
That it ain’t exactly real
Or it’s real,
but it ain’t exactly there
From the war against disorder
From the sirens night and day
From the fires of the homeless
From the ashes of the gay
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A

It’s coming through
a crack in the wall
On a visionary flood of alcohol
From the staggering account
Of the Sermon on the Mount
Which I don’t pretend
to understand at all
It’s coming from the silence
On the dock of the bay
From the brave, the bold,
the battered heart of Chevrolet
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A

It’s coming from
the sorrow in the street
The holy places
where the races meet
From the homicidal bitchin’
That goes down in every kitchen
To determine who will serve
and who will eat
From the wells of disappointment
Where the women kneel to pray
For the grace of God
in the desert here
And the desert far away
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A

Sail on, sail on
O mighty ship of state!
To the shores of need
Past the reefs of greed
Through the squalls of hate
Sail on, sail on, sail on…

It’s coming
to America first
The cradle of the best
and of the worst
It’s here they got the range
And the machinery for change
And it’s here they got
the spiritual thirst
It’s here the family’s broken
And it’s here the lonely say
That the heart has got to open
In a fundamental way
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A

It’s coming from
the women and the men
Oh baby,
we’ll be making love again
We’ll be going down so deep
The river’s going to weep
And the mountain’s
going to shout Amen!
It’s coming
like the tidal flood
Beneath the lunar sway
Imperial, mysterious
In amorous array
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A

Sail on, sail on
O mighty ship of state!
To the shores of need
Past the reefs of greed
Through the squalls of hate
Sail on, sail on, sail on…

I’m sentimental,
if you know what I mean
I love the country
but I can’t stand the scene
And I’m neither left or right
I’m just staying home tonight
Getting lost in that
hopeless little screen
But I’m stubborn
as those garbage bags
That time cannot decay
I’m junk but I’m still holding up
This little wild bouquet
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A

“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.

Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.

Blessed are those who hunger
and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.

Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for
they will be called children of God.

Blessed are those who are persecuted
because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

    1. I think perhaps that “herd mentality”
failed strategy should leave no doubt.
‘Survival of the Fittest’ , rather than
      acting on caution, science, and
compassion for the weakest, is a
‘Dog Eat Dog’ way to run a country.
Here in Victoria, Australia, we are
all wearing face masks, and still
closed for business, as just 700
      of our elderly have succumbed
to the Corona-19 virus. I can only
imagine the chaos over there, where
      over 200,000 have perished.
But, as you know Liz, I never make
      comment on other people’s politics😎

      1. And here in the good ole USA, tonight’s newscast informed us that NYC logged in 1,000 new infections in one day, and Florida has just thrown open the bars and restaurants. You see, if we just pretend that the virus doesn’t exist, it will mag-i-cal-ly disappear all on its own!

        “Democracy don’t rule the world.
You better get that in your head.
This world is ruled by violence,
but I guess that’s better left unsaid.”

        ~ Bob Dylan

  1. I love your poem the people of the world today are hard to take. I love the countries they are beautiful as they were created but the inhabitants spoil the beauty and remove the pleasure with their selfishness. The prayer by Jesus a good reminder to those of faith. I have never worn a mask kept my faith in the Lord. I do not trust the data as we all know figures can be changed to represent whatever the solution or fact is needed. Bless you David.

    1. Thank you abundantly, Miriam 🙏
Here Down Under we are masking
up as part of a “Make Australia 🇦🇺
      Beautiful Again” campaign. It does
seem to be working 😷 Plus …
after many a long lock down 🔒
month, that virus is on the run 👾

  2. Beautiful poem of Cohen and timeless thoughts of Jesus.

    Thanks David.

It is strange that at this point of time the two biggest democracies in the world are struggling to remain democratic.

But I believe He knows what He is doing 😅🙏

    1. The strangest thing, Ashok,
      that as all hell incrementally
      breaks loose (just slow enough
      that many, particularly in the
      privileged West, hardly notice),
and the words of the Prophets
begin to ring, things start to get chaotically interesting. Like
      Marilyn Manson has got control
      of the speaker system. Perhaps
the end is just beginning 🙏
As the Chinese say, may you
      live in interesting times 😎

      1. p.s. you’d probably wouldn’t be surprised to know how tiny interactions at the swamp level can sometimes make a difference… that is, if they’re not just distractions created by hired huts I suppose. Even then, even hired hearts sometimes move to their own beat.

      2. The politics of special interest
        lobbyists, where the greater good
just doesn’t exist. Plastic is cheap
        and convenient. The stock market
is fuelled by gasoline, at full speed.
        Greed is what you need
if you wish to succeed in a world
going down a storm water drain.
In the year 2020, fossil fuel driving ,
        and buying your shopping
        in petrochemical wrapping
        makes no ecological sense.
        and is environmentally insane.
        Global warming . . .
        Food insecurity
        Grapes of Karmic Wrath
        The hard reality.
There is an ash bowl coming
with a double dose of dust.
Yet, I have faith that there is
a true course for the finding …

        💠 💠 💠

In the time of my favor
        I will answer you,
and in the day of salvation
        I will help you;
I will keep you and will make you
to be a covenant for the people,
        to restore the land
        and to reassign
        its desolate inheritances,
        to say to the captives,
        “Come out” ,
        and to those in darkness,
        “Be free!”
They will feed beside the roads
        and find pasture
        on every barren hill.

  3. The division is as deep as the delusion. A bottomless pit. And what’s been brewing is boiling over now. But people are taking to church and peacefully—praying. Interesting times indeed…🙂

  4. The passing of RBG’s passing felt like the morning of November 4, 2016 filled with tears. Soon enough we will see if our Constitution still has meaning. Some have lost there reasoning and others their spine. *sigh*. POBS must suffer an overwhelming loss. Prayers are said and hopefully heard, however our power lays in ourselves and the ballot box.

    1. Thanks Elle for giving me the
inspiration for my next bit of
      blogging 🙏😎
      Thomas Jefferson once said,
the government you elect is the government you deserve.
      In Australia voting is compulsory.
It does seem to ensure that we
end up with a government that
      tries to serve everybody’s best

A bit of Leonard Cohen to get
      things in motion.
      A new Beatitude for your perusing;

    1. China, when it uses “re-education
      camps”, and tramples on other
      people’s freedoms, becomes the
World’s problem. And to think, they
      have a captive audience fervently
      believing their leadership is actually
      solving problems by behaving in
      such an authoritarian manner! The
      result of relentless brainwashing.
I was under the impression that
      Socialism was meant to elevate
      people above and beyond the
      squabbles of tribal nationalism.

    1. From a distance, having the good
fortune to reside in the Land Down
Under, things in the U. S. seem to
      be terminally divisive. A political
system being run by, and for, the
interests of Wall Street. With just
the illusion of being “by the people,
and for the people”. It’s not a good
look when you’re the only super
power on the block who isn’t a
      totalitarian state under a dictator.
Believe me, Deepak, I’d like nothing
better than the U. S. getting it all
      together, and becoming a true
      free world leader 🌎 ☮️

      1. Well david i heard from the news channels that US is not exactly what it portrayed to the world.
Democracy is just a word, people are not getting that free and fair elections that Americas shows.
I don’t the exact picture of America its just what i heard.

According to the Theory of Chaos,
craziness will always be with us,
to a greater or lesser degree.
For the sake of decency, and the
dignity of all humanity, may it
      subside amicably, and peacefully.

Thanks for your feedback, Pat 🙏

  5. A great poem David! I could feel your passion throughout.
This sums up the feelings of many….
    I’m sentimental,
if you know what I mean
    I love the country
but I can’t stand the scene
And I’m neither left or right
    I’m just staying home tonight

    1. That particular verse does
strike a cord for me, Dwight.
I’m a city boy, who lives in
      the great Aussie bush. Plus,
I believe in balance. As the
      Oracle of Delphi instructed
      all those seeking guidance,
      “Nothing in extreme! “.

      I can’t run no more
      With that lawless crowd
While the killers in high places
      Say their prayers out loud
      But they’ve summoned,
      they’ve summoned up
      A thundercloud
And they’re going to hear from me
Ring the bells that still can ring
      Forget your perfect offering
      There is a crack,
      a crack in everything
That’s how the light gets in

      ~ Leonard Cohen

“But I tell you, love your enemies
and pray for those who persecute
you, that you may be children of
your Father in heaven. He causes
his sun to rise on the evil and the
good, and sends rain on the
      righteous and the unrighteous.”

      nothing in extreme 🔄 🚫
Life is precious, and so is a
      clear conscience. But big brother
      prohibition just doesn’t work.

      1. Alas, even the choices are manipulated. There is no choice in a country with a two-party system. The people wanted Bernie and the DNC said you can’t have him. Look how they treat the best thing to happen to congress in its history, (The Squad).

      2. Bernie’s brand of Euro Socialism
was too much for the spiritual
        home of Dog-Eat-Dog Capitalism.
Just like you still need to pretend
you’re a Christian to be elected
President in the US, you also have
to declare that you’re not a godless
        socialist 😎
