Werewolf Déluge

“Just keep on walking!”

I saw a werewolf

with a hymn book in his hand

prowling around

as he sniffed the ground

from Jonestown to Gaza

He’s that well manicured gent

some say he is heaven sent

Huh, I’d like to meet his tailor

You can hear him howling

on your television set

Better not turn it on

Little old lady got bitten

late last night

Werewolves of religion again

. . . Ooh Ahh

A most sanctimonious
dish licker
House trained
ordained
and chain ganged
A holy roller rock spider
The High Oppressor
and possessor
of the sacred
processed cookie cutter
A common deviator
and ruthless denominator
The bottom feeder
from an archaic crypt
of a seductive
and destructive error
Misgiving readings
from a counterfeit script
in the palm
of an omega predator
and an alpha hypocrite
Hunting little tiger
Out for a bite
Stalking the night
Keep an eye on your son
Best lock up your daughter
Werewolves of Religion
deviants of Christendom
peddling science fiction
from some dead
and buried author
with fantasies of flight
aboard a dianetic cruise
Like a tom cat on heat
with the romcom blues
A diffuser of confusion
defusing the light
Preaching in part
yet with every action
and reaction
denying the total sum
of Kingdom come
Out of his right mind
by the hand of slight
hidden out of plain sight
the highly refined
and cultured lupine
beguiling the gullible
absurding the improbable

“Nothing is impossible.
All roads lead to Nirvana,
but my way is much better!”

Packaging and marketing
the celestial sublime
If you don’t own the patent
… isn’t that a crime?
Like ringing the bell
and knocking the door
for imaginary points
that you need to score
Lame as taking alms
from the desperate poor
to feed the Big Empty
Like zealous zombies
of the highly contagious
driven by hunger pangs
insatiable and ferocious
for that crazy phariee yeast
from the the belly of the beast
and of course
a good seat at his table
Along with a gang
of A-list celebrities
all baring their fangs
A Hollywood photo opportunity
for the spiritual vultures
of los demonios paparazzi

I saw a werewolf

smoking a cuban cigar

whilst howling at the moon

to the tune of ‘Instant Karma’

I saw a werewolf

at Club Nirvana

dancing with Che Guevara

doing The Werewolves of Martyrdom

Yes, I’m sure

I saw a werewolf

You could tell

by his deadly fruit

Wearing an Armani suit

whilst blessing the troops

at Armageddon

His hair was perfect

just like John Travolta’s

in Saturday Night Fever

. . . Ooh Ahh

Of paradiso promises broken
within the thin air of despair
upon a dance floor forsaken
and a multitude
of barking voices
Don’t be sheep skinned
Enslaved by neolithic religion
rebranded in “New Age” drag
then mauled by superstition
Don’t allow a rabid wolf
to stand between you
and the ever loving truth
The insanity of humanity
hell bent
and then torn in half
Bent over some or other
always yet another
… golden calf

My empirical proof of truth;
Does it deliver true freedom
or the destructive bondage
of a deceptive delusion
along with an over dosage
of divisive division?

A question in the seeking
For before the sun arises
there is darkness
And with certainty …
a full moon is coming

sort-of-believing, and
used-to-be-believing friends:
I am sorry that so often the
biggest obstacle to God has been
Christians. Christians who have
had so much to say with our mouths,
and so little to show with our lives.
I am sorry that so often we have
forgotten. the Christ of our

Forgive us for the embarrassing
things we have done in the name
of God.” ~ Shane Claiborne

      1. I get annoyed that good folk – whatever they might or might not believe in – get tarred with a brush they don’t deserve. As you know maybe better than me, there are extreme nutters out there, whether they be atheist like me, or (think they) have a belief and its those nutters who get in your face, interpreting things to fit their cause who are the one’s I can’t respect. To the rest of the good sorts, I say ‘be free to believe in whatever makes you – put simply – a compassionate human’. I think that was what I was getting out of your fine post.

      2. Thanks for your thoughtful
        comments, George.
I do see dark forces, with
        purpose, doing their worst to
        turn earnest seekers away
        from knowing Jesus.
If you let a hypocrite stand
        between you, and God, you’re
        allowing a hypocrite to be
        closer to God than yourself.
God is love. Don’t settle for
        superficial substitutes.

  1. Absolutely brilliant David! As a Preacher’s Kid I can relate to what you have so eloquently described. Believe it or not, I live in a dry county with laws against the sale of alcohol! The “Werewolves of Religion and deviants of Christendom” have defeated referendums to allow retail package stores in the last two elections. Nothing more than a bunch of bible thumping holy roller closet drinkers who buy their liquor in neighboring counties. Simply unbelievable. You are the man David!

      1. It’s interesting that Christians
        pushed the U.S. goverment into
        introducing the Prohibition of
        alcohol, thus handing the
industry over to criminals, with the resulting corruption
        of police and politicians.
        Big mistake!
But then it was the same.
        Christian activists who pushed
to have alcohol legalized again, to stop the carnage.
A good example of why church
        and state should always
        be seperate.

    1. Yes Victoria, Warren was an
      excitable boy, just like me.
I’ve been inspired by (plagiarised) his wonderful
      songs several times.
      Linda Ronstadt made a fortune
      out of the Zevon’s music,
      yet still cried, “Poor, poor,
      pitiful me!”.

  2. What lies in old Mother Hubbard’s cupboard?
    From Parsons to Pasadena
    there’s a full moon rising
    On jet propulsion
    from mystery Babylon
    What a project!
Should we hit the road, Jack?
And not come back, no more! No more!
    What the L, Ron?
A Phoenix has come crawling, Crowley
And come running up that alley stair!
    Ordo Templi Orientis!
    Great balls of fire!

      Some things are worth the

  3. I read these lines and was blown away.
I was bitten by a werewolf, seems like yesterday.
He was dressed up in a psych degree, lewd smirk, and body odor.
I was there, a sinner, by my (Bible) college order.
I broke the rules, was shunned, shamed and pariah’d.
His answer? “Let’s sin together, then a pray-yah!”
I walked out from his office (and the college) in disgust.
I took that final straw, and with it all, burned it into dust.
    (nf).
This poem you wrote is so powerful and is really close to the bone for me. I wanted to write yesterday after I read it, but yesterday got away. I’ve missed visiting your blog. Thank you for writing this poem David. I love it, more than words can say. This needs to be read by everyone who has burned it all after breaking their heart on the falsehood of religion. Religion is meant to control and enslave. It is a construct. Jesus sat on a hill to speak. If he were here, I think he’d be overturning every table labeled “religion.” Thank you for sharing that quote at the end too.

    1. Thanks for your heartfelt
      thoughtful response, Niki.
Yes, the truth to set free.
      The doctrines of men, self
      serving scheming dressed up
      as spiritualism and religion.
It just makes me want to shout,
      “Forget all 2 thousand years
      of religious misinformation,
and get back to the sermon
      on the mount”.
God is Love … and in him
      there is no darkness.

  4. I’ve reread this poem and am still in awe, bobbing my head all the way through. That quote at the end reminds me of a convo I had with my manager…I was saying I’ve wanted to take classes at university on the history of religions hoping I can find objective historians informing me. I am not religious but I am spiritual I suppose…my religion is the Golden Rule and compassion. I still have lots to work on but am still trying . Great poem that makes one think and hopefully take a long look at our bellybutton

    1. Merci beaucoup, Mademoiselle
Sunflower in the Garden … or
should I just say, Cheryl Lynn?
      Jesus declared that the
      Kingdom is within, and that
he had come to set us free.
He reserved.his harshest rebukes for the judgemental,
      self righteous, and corrupted
      leaders of religion. I believe
      Jesus Christ himself, in person,
is the way, the truth, and the light. Jesus is my spirituality.
      We have his teachings, his
words plain and simple, no need
      for theological interpretations.
So, I guess that makes me a
      fundamental … but no need
to get all religious about it,
      because I’ve been set free.
Free to find true hope, faith,
      and love.

  5. Brilliant poem, I read it more than once and I still can’t get enough of it! I agree that Jesus is above people’s institutions of faith. What a frustrating feeling…to search for Him in stone-cold buildings, instead of our hearts!
I also wanted to thank you with all my heart for following my blog! It means a lot! Have a wonderful day!

  6. We have far too many wolves in sheep’s clothing or werewolves, as you term them. “Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits” (Matt. 7: 15-16).

        We’re the restless hearted,
        not the chained and bound.
        Love is all there is.
It makes the world go ’round.
        Love and only love,
        it can’t be denied
No matter what you think about it
You just won’t be able to do
        without it
Take a tip from one who’s tried.

And now my phone in the other
        Riffing soulful brothers

      6. These last few comments, David, remind me of the 4 years I lived in Vancouver and there were a group of Richard Dawkins admiring militant atheist types who always had an information booth tent in front of the Vancouver Art Gallery.

The sign above their tent read, If you believe in God, you might as well believe in vampires, werewolves, ghosts, leprechauns, unicorns and fairies.

I felt like going up to them some day and saying, I believe in all of those.

But then I moved from Vancouver and I never did.

      7. Richard Dawkins is a very sad man.
Like a boy who thinks he’s found out
that Santa Claus isn’t real, so must
        go bursting the Christmas bubble
of all the other little kids.
His view that the Universe is about
the mathematics, with no room for
        the spiritual, makes this existence
a cold hard place. His fear is that if
        he concedes any possible glimmer
of a spiritual realm, he must also
accept the possibility of a creator
God. Dawkins really does needs to
get out and about more, instead of
being struck in a sterile laboratory.

  8. I wonder, David, just looking at the pictures of people with halos, (although I can find nothing Online to confirm my wondering, but then the religious powers-that-be do not like freethinkers who question their orthodoxy,) is the origin of the halo to be found in the mystery and fertility cults of ancient Babylonia? The sun was regarded by them as the glans of God. And the glans itself was likened to the sacred mushroom which opened up the mind to other realities, other divine worlds… And also there is the migraine aura which has been likened to the light that breaks through dark nimbus clouds. And so on.

    Liked by 3 people

    1. We do have auras. I think it’s more
scientific that mystic. The ability to
see it may simply be genetic. I’m
sure my cat can see it. New age
con artists, like fortune tellers, often
claim to have the “gift” as they flatter
      and fleece the gullible. Perhaps
      particularly spiritual people in the
past have emitted a visible glow?
But I believe it would be mostly in
the spiritual eye of the beholder.
      I did read Aldous Huxley’s
      `The Doors of Perception`, and
      `The Sacred Mushroom and the
      Cross` by John Marco Allegro.
      So I’m convinced that the
inspiration for much of the religious
art of the ancients was psychotropic
… in part. Much like today 😎

  9. Werewolves, not only in London
    but all over before sundown
Crisp pressed suits, high polished shoes
and sunglasses so you can’t see the evil glint in their eyes!

Your poem has a smooth, almost jazz like rhythm. You ever think about putting together an audiobook of some of your works? Would love to hear you read this one.

Yes, last time I saw a Werewolf
he was checking his Rollex watch

For the moon was waxing, and he
was itching to do some howling 🐺

  10. Another thought occurs to me David, namely, this: werewolves as well as witches were persecuted by the Church. The reason these ‘shamans’ were persecuted and tortured (by the Inquisition) has much to do with the sacred mushroom. I believe that the ancients of the Americas believed in creatures they called ‘were-jaguars’. Of course the Church missionaries would have none of it. Probably the only thing that really interested them was the abundance of El Dorado-ean gold…

      1. Yes, David, I have spent a lifetime searching for this elusive thing they call “the truth”. And what have I found? Only this, there is no truth. Or, rather, truth is relative, there is no absolute truth. And for those who claim that the actual meaning of the phrase “the truth” (as in “the way the truth and the life”) refers to the teachings of one, Jesus, well, the reality is justice obtains neither here on earth nor in some afterlife – whatever the wishful thinkers might believe. The truth, then, that sets me free, is this: Don’t fall into the trap of believing in anything you have been told. Have a great 2020, David.

died at least once. My perception of
        truth comes only through personal

streak caused me to break loose, and
seek beyond a gift wrapped box 🎁

  12. I imagine Christ looking down at the world and soughing over “What has become of my original Christianity?” Roman Catholics, Baptists, Lutherans, Mormons, the First Church of Whatever, and on and on. And members deciding which one will especially suit their forgiveness of sins or concepts of Heaven (some believe in 7 layers), Hell, Purgatory and Limbo. How I hated the old confessional days!

It always amazes me that something
so pure and inclusive as the teachings
of Jesus Christ can be corrupted and
twisted in the hands of religiosity.
