Gospel Radio

Gospel Radio

Everybody desperate
tryin’ to make ends meet
Work all day
made to pay
keepin’ their arses
off the dirty street
But alas, their lives
are incomplete

But don’t it make you
want to free your soul?
Upright from wrong
… Gospel Radio
I heard Natalie Cole
singing sweet and soulful
on the radio
… that Gospel Radio

Everybody hungry
the truth to know
thirsting in spirit
seeking a safe place to go
As the anger
and resentment flow

But don’t it make you
want to deepen your soul?
From weak to strong
… Gospel Radio
I heard Aretha Franklin
singing sweet and soulful
on the radio
… Gospel Radio

You know, the Man
he’s got his problems too
He will surely
take them out on you
In walks the Disciple
face all aglow
Beaming bright
tuned in tight
… to that Gospel Radio

Don’t it make you long
to sweeten your song?
To sing along
… to that Gospel Radio
I heard Mahalia Jackson
singing sweet and soulful
strong and spiritual
on the radio
… Gospel Radio

You’ve been seeking
searching for the One
The Holy One
Hoping that
His Righteousness
might just
might just
might just come
That Kingdom Come
I heard a whisper
deep in the night
“Be watchful
for His eternal light”

Don’t it make you
want to rock n’ roll
all night long?
… Gospel Radio
I heard the Angels singing
sweet and soulful
beyond the radio
… that Gospel Radio

Inspired by the lyrics of Warren Zevon

In memory of Aretha Franklin.
Her version of Amazing Grace
never failed to take me to
a sacred place … Respect eternal.

      1. That’s cool. I was just googling to listen to her music- I like Bessie Smith but she’s not gospel- what a pair they would make. I think Mahalia came after Bessie but not sure. > googling. Cheers

  1. a beautiful poem, David. I absolutely loved it — and I love Gospel music: one of my favourite pastiches of gospel, though you may not like it, is the Stones ‘The Girl with the Faraway Eyes’ from ‘Some Girls’

      1. Lol, thanks my dear!! 💛 You too! Wishing you divine moments and days, in contemplation and far away from stress-station. Me as a very much introvert, actually enjoy staying away from people often so… reading my grandparents love letters and reducing my online time to slow down… Blessings y mucho amor my mate💛

      2. May God bless 🙏
        and keep you always
May your wishes all come true
May you always do for others
And let others do for you
May you build a ladder to the stars
        And climb on every rung
And may you stay forever young

May you grow up to be righteous
May you grow up to be true
And may you always know the truth
And see the lights surrounding you
        May you always be courageous
        Stand upright and be strong
And may you stay forever young

May your hands always be busy
May your feet always be swift
May you have a strong foundation
When the winds of changes shift
May your heart always be joyful
May your song always be sung
And may you stay forever 💛
